Though Mr. Gale appeared healthy, those close to him know that he struggled for years with Garfieldism. The square on the left, which depicts the base of a sign with four casters on it, is a horrifying image of Gale's Garfieldism at its worst. Gale's wife Missy Martin recalls, "That panel is Dave at rock bottom." Gale bounced back, however, thanks to what he called "a steady diet of Hank Ketcham and Milt Gross." The square on the right, drawn just a few months later and depicting a similar subject, shows Gale fully recovered.

Here's the topper. I must say, it looks better in person. This is likely due to my rather feeble grasp of photography (I'm even less a photographer than I am a sculpter). Huge thanks to James Grace, my former teacher and current colleague. When I was pulling my few remaining hairs out trying to sculpt the bodies he came to the rescue and sculpted them for me. Is it just me, or did he make Missy a little more glutealy endowed than in the drawing?
